Who am I?
For those of you who are new to me and my website, welcome!
My name is Isabella Thuringer, I am an independently working artist currently based in Indianapolis, Indiana. I work primarily in painting, I particularly love acrylic, watercolors, and oil painting, but I do occasionally stray in sort of ‘random’ art forms like sculpture and printmaking, so keep an eye out for those things if you are interested!
I’ve kinda been based all over the map in my life. I was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, I moved to Rocklin, California when I was eight and stayed there for ten years, my parents then moved our family to Fort Wayne, Indiana about two months after my high school graduation and ten days before I started college in Seward, Nebraska. These facts are only important because my emotions play a very big role in the art I am creating, but more on that later.
How did this all begin? Well let me tell you. I was born into a family of musicians, and don’t get me wrong, I love to sing as much as the rest of them, but more than anything I’d say in middle school what motivated me in choosing a passion was how passionately I wanted to be seen as different than my older sister, who was involved in music. So I chose art. That’s right, my great love of art was really motivated by my great love of being different. I joined the art class freshman year of high school instead of choir, and found that I loved it more than anything, it just stuck. I was in art all through high school and eventually decided to major in it in college. I actually started as art education, and then after about a month of the first general education class on campus, I knew it wasn’t for me. I would think about having to teach high schoolers and would shudder, then someone would say something like, “well you could teach little kids!” Even worse. But people kept telling me that I needed a career, I couldn’t just be an artist.
Why not?
Let’s be clear, they were right, this is crazy. I graduated in May of 2025 with a BFA in studio art, and I actually got married about a month and a half later. My husband is wonderful, a high school band and choir teacher (because obviously) and the most patient and wonderful person in the world. When I said, “I need an extra room for my studio,” he said “how big?”
So now I work out of about 3/4 of a room in our apartment here in Indianapolis. I spend my days working part time as a fudge maker downtown, but primarily I sit at a tiny table with not enough light and not enough room and I make my art. I’m influenced primarily by my family, my memories, and my emotions. I’ve always been an emotional and somewhat dramatic person, so of course that’s what bleeds into my artwork.
If you made it this far, wow! You’re amazing! Thank you! I would love to strike up a conversation with you and hear about your thoughts on my art of let me know what you are working on. Thank you - Isabella
